What Size Dumpster Do I Need? A Homeowner's Guide

What Size Dumpster Do I Need? A Homeowner's Guide

Standing in your Haverhill driveway staring at a pile of old drywall, busted tile, and a garage full of things you meant to deal with years ago? One of the first questions we hear at Haverhill Dumpster Rental Group is simple: what size dumpster do I need? Get it right and your project moves smoothly. Get it wrong and you're either paying for air or scrambling for a second haul.

The good news is that dumpster sizing isn't complicated once you understand two things: how much your debris takes up (volume) and how much it weighs (weight). This guide walks you through both, matches the common sizes to real projects around the Merrimack Valley, and helps you decide when to size up or down.

Dumpster Sizes at a Glance

Roll-off dumpsters are measured in cubic yards. That number tells you the volume the container holds, roughly how many pickup-truck loads it equals. Here's how the common sizes break down.

Size Approx. Dimensions Holds (Pickup Loads) Best For
10-yard 12 ft L x 8 ft W x 3.5 ft H ~3 loads Small bathroom remodel, single-room cleanout, heavy debris (concrete, dirt)
15-yard 16 ft L x 8 ft W x 4 ft H ~4-5 loads Mid-size cleanout, small kitchen remodel, deck removal
20-yard 16 ft L x 8 ft W x 5 ft H ~6 loads Large cleanout, kitchen remodel, roofing, flooring
30-yard 22 ft L x 8 ft W x 6 ft H ~9 loads Whole-home cleanout, major renovation, new construction, additions

Dimensions vary slightly by container, but these are close to what you'll see dropped in your driveway. Now let's match them to what you're actually throwing away.

Sizing by Project

Bathroom Remodel: 10-Yard

A standard bathroom gut generates less debris than people expect. Old tile, a vanity, a tub, some drywall, and fixtures fit comfortably in a 10-yard dumpster. The catch here is weight: tile, cast iron, and mortar are heavy. A bathroom's worth of tile alone can push a 10-yard toward its weight limit, so don't assume you need something bigger just because the bin looks half empty.

Kitchen Remodel: 20-Yard

Kitchens are bigger, and so is the debris. Cabinets, countertops, flooring, drywall, and old appliances add up fast. A 20-yard dumpster is the sweet spot for most kitchen remodels. If you're only swapping cabinets and counters without touching floors or walls, a 15-yard may do the job.

Garage or Basement Cleanout: 15 or 20-Yard

Cleanouts are all about volume, not weight. Boxes, furniture, old exercise equipment, and years of accumulated stuff are bulky but light. A 15-yard handles a single-car garage or a tidy basement. For a packed two-car garage or a full basement, step up to a 20-yard so you're not playing Tetris with the last few loads.

Roofing: 20-Yard (Watch the Weight)

Roofing tear-offs are deceptively heavy. Asphalt shingles are dense, and a typical roof can produce several tons of debris. A 20-yard dumpster covers most residential roofs, but the limiting factor is almost always weight, not space. For larger roofs or multiple layers of old shingles, we may recommend splitting the load or using a dedicated heavy-debris arrangement. When in doubt, call us and give us your rough square footage.

Whole-Home Cleanout or Major Renovation: 30-Yard

Emptying an entire house, gutting multiple rooms, or handling new construction? A 30-yard dumpster gives you room to work without constant swaps. It's the workhorse for estate cleanouts, additions, and big remodels where debris comes from every corner of the property.

Volume vs. Weight: The Rule Everyone Forgets

Here's the single most important concept in dumpster sizing, and it trips up more homeowners than anything else.

Every dumpster has a weight limit as well as a volume limit. With heavy materials, you'll hit the weight cap long before the container looks full. A 20-yard bin might be only a third full of concrete and already be maxed out.

Materials fall into two camps:

  • Light and bulky (volume fills first): furniture, cardboard, wood, insulation, general household junk. These fill the space before they hit the weight cap.
  • Heavy and dense (weight fills first): concrete, brick, dirt, tile, asphalt shingles, plaster. A small amount weighs a lot.

This is why we often recommend a smaller dumpster for heavy debris. A 10-yard filled with concrete is easier to haul safely and keeps you under weight limits, whereas a big bin full of the same material would be dangerously overloaded and can't be legally transported. If your project mixes both, tell us the breakdown and we'll help you sort it out.

Driveway Space: Will It Fit?

Before your dumpster arrives, look at where it's going. Most residential roll-offs need:

  • Length: 20-22 feet of clear space for the container plus room for the delivery truck to position it.
  • Width: at least 8-10 feet, roughly a standard driveway.
  • Height: clearance overhead for the truck's hydraulic arm, so watch for low branches, wires, and carports.

A standard Haverhill driveway easily fits a 10 or 20-yard bin. For a 30-yard, make sure you've got the extra length. If driveway space is tight, we can talk through placement options or a street permit. To protect your pavement, we place boards under the container on request.

When to Size Up or Down

Size up when: your debris is light and bulky, you're unsure how much you'll generate, or your project might grow (renovations have a way of expanding). One larger dumpster is almost always cheaper than a second delivery and pickup.

Size down when: you're dealing with heavy materials like concrete, dirt, or tile. Weight limits, not volume, will govern your project, and a smaller bin keeps you legal and safe.

Still not sure? That's exactly what we're here for. Describe your project and we'll recommend a size based on real experience across the Merrimack Valley, not a guess.
